Privacy Policy

Effective date: August 18, 2026 · Last updated: August 18, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Carl Franzon ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects your personal data when you use Versus (listed on the App Store as VS: Comic Trivia Battles, the "App"). By downloading or using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

1. Who we are

The party responsible for your personal data (the "data controller") is:

  • Developer: Carl Franzon
  • App name: Versus (App Store listing: VS: Comic Trivia Battles)
  • Email:
  • Address: Postal address available on request via the email above.

The App uses Supabase (a hosted backend platform) to provide authentication, database storage, and file storage. Supabase acts as a processor that stores data on our behalf.

2. Data we collect

We collect only the data needed to run the game and its social features. Depending on how you use the App, this may include:

Account and profile data

  • Email address — when you create an account with email and password, or when you sign in with Apple or Google.
  • Username — the display name you choose, shown to friends and on leaderboards.
  • Password — stored in hashed, encrypted form by our authentication provider; we never see your plaintext password.
  • Age group — a broad age band you select during onboarding, used to tailor content and difficulty (we do not collect your exact date of birth).
  • Avatar image — an optional profile picture you upload, stored in our avatar storage bucket.

Gameplay and social data

  • Game statistics — sessions played, correct/incorrect answers, scores, win streaks, and achievements.
  • Progress history — a record of completed sessions used to show your trends and analytics.
  • Friends and challenges — friend requests you send or receive, and the challenges, scores, and results you exchange with other players.
  • Reports — if you report a question, the report and the reason you provide.

Technical and device data

  • Device push token — an Apple Push Notification service (APNs) identifier used to deliver push notifications, if you enable them.
  • App and device information — such as app version, device type, and operating system version, used for functionality, diagnostics, and troubleshooting.

The App does not use third-party advertising networks and does not sell your personal data.

3. How we use your information

We use the data we collect to:

  1. Provide the game — create and maintain your account, serve questions, record scores, and save your progress.
  2. Enable social features — let you add friends, send and receive challenges, and appear on leaderboards.
  3. Personalize your experience — adapt content, difficulty, and tone based on the age group you select.
  4. Send notifications — deliver challenge, friend-request, and reminder notifications you have opted into.
  5. Improve and maintain the App — diagnose issues, prevent abuse, and understand how features are used.
  6. Provide support — respond to your questions and requests.
  7. Comply with legal obligations — meet applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the United Kingdom, we process your personal data on the following legal bases:

  1. Performance of a contract — to provide the App and the features you request, such as your account and gameplay.
  2. Consent — where you have opted in, for example to push notifications; you can withdraw consent at any time.
  3. Legitimate interests — to keep the App secure, prevent abuse, and improve our features, where these interests are not overridden by your rights.
  4. Compliance with legal obligations — where processing is required by law.

5. How we share your information

We do not sell your personal data. We share data only as described below:

  • Service providers. We use Supabase to host authentication, our database, and file storage. We use Apple's Push Notification service to deliver notifications. These providers process data on our behalf under their own terms and privacy policies.
  • Other players. Your username, avatar, and relevant scores are visible to friends you connect with, to players you challenge, and on leaderboards you appear in.
  • Sign-in providers. If you sign in with Apple or Google, that provider handles authentication and shares limited information (such as your email) with us so we can create your account.
  • Legal and safety. We may disclose data if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users, the public, or us.
  • Business transfers. If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your data may be transferred as part of that transaction.

6. International data transfers

Your data may be processed and stored on servers located outside your country, including outside the EEA or UK. Where we transfer personal data internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses to protect it in line with applicable law.

7. Data retention

We keep your personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the App. If you delete your account or ask us to delete your data, we will remove or anonymize it within a reasonable period, except where we are required to retain it to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, or enforce our agreements.

8. Data security

We use technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including:

  • Encryption in transit — data exchanged between the App and our backend is transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS/TLS) connections.
  • Access controls — access to personal data is limited to what is needed to operate the App.
  • Secure authentication — passwords are stored in hashed form by our authentication provider.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Children's privacy

Versus is designed to be enjoyable for players of many ages and is rated 4+ on the App Store. Because the App may be used by children, we take children's privacy seriously and aim to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in the United States and similar laws elsewhere.

  • We collect only the limited information described in this policy and do not require a child to disclose more than is reasonably necessary to play.
  • We do not use children's data for behavioral advertising, and we do not knowingly sell children's personal data.
  • Parents and guardians can review, request changes to, or request deletion of their child's information, and can refuse further collection, by contacting us using the details in the "Contact us" section.

10. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights over your personal data:

  • Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Rectification — correct inaccurate or incomplete data (much of which you can edit in the App's profile settings).
  • Erasure — request deletion of your account and data.
  • Restriction and objection — ask us to limit or stop certain processing.
  • Portability — receive your data in a portable, machine-readable format.
  • Withdraw consent — where processing is based on consent, withdraw it at any time.

California residents (CCPA/CPRA): you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request deletion, and to opt out of any "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. We do not sell or share your personal information as those terms are defined by California law.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

11. Push notifications

With your permission, we send push notifications for events such as challenge invitations, friend requests, and optional play reminders. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device's system settings, and you can adjust reminder settings inside the App.

12. This website

This site at playversus.vercel.app is a static promotional and legal-information site hosted by our hosting provider. The host may automatically log technical data such as IP address, browser user-agent, and request time to operate and secure the site. We do not run advertising pixels or a separate analytics SDK on this site.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you within the App. Your continued use of the App after an update means you accept the revised policy.
